Robert Rankin

Robert L. Rankin, age 76, of Portage, MI passed away Sunday afternoon, February 4, 2018. Bob was born September 27, 1941 in Detroit, MI, the son of the late Clarence and Ethel (Ogden) Rankin. He attended Alma College, Henry Ford Community College, and was a graduate of Western Michigan University. Prior to his retirement he was a teacher and coach for several Detroit area high schools. Bob taught Physical Education and History; coached football, basketball, baseball, golf and track; was inducted into the Michigan High School Hall of Fame and was a member of the Michigan Sports SAGES. He also was the Director of Parks and Recreation in Dearborn Heights for several years. Bob was an avid golfer and enjoyed being a Shriner. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Bob was preceded in death by a brother, Ed Rankin. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Rankin; children, Robert Rankin, Jr., Rebecca (Jeff) Engel, Robyn (Jason) Leighton; 6 grandchildren, Cecilia, Jack, Matt, Erynne, Catey, and Lukas; brothers, Bill (Carole) Rankin, Jim Rankin; and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of Bob's life will be held on February 10th beginning at 5pm, at Indian Run Golf Club, 6359 RS Ave East in Scotts, MI 49088. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Langeland Family Funeral Homes
