Life Story / Obituary
Robert “Griff” Griffith, Jr. of Vicksburg, MI passed away suddenly at his home on September 11, 2017. He was 75 years old and a lifelong resident of the Kalamazoo area. He leaves behind his loving wife of 34 years and best friend, Roberta; 3 daughters, Lisa Griffith of Royal Oak, MI; Michelle (Brad) Lawson of Plymouth, MI; and Amy Denby of Monroe, MI. He has 4 grandchildren – Austin, Dale, Olivia and Derek. He is also survived by his sister, Sally Creek; his sisters-in-law Marie LaFreniere, Loie Connaghan, and Kim Jones of Beaver Island, MI along with nieces and nephews, Rory, Keith, Kaylyn, Tessa, Brennan, Turner, and Quinn, Gina, and John. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Griffith, Sr.; mother, Elsie Benzenberg; and step-mother, Florence King.
Griff was a people person often running into people he knew wherever he went, or easily turning strangers into friends. He was a fun and loyal friend who could be counted on in times of need. He was well known for his favorite catch-phrase “Howcha do!” and lovingly referred to loved ones as “Melonhead!” He also enjoyed sharing a beer or two with buddies at his favorite watering holes.
He was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corp as a Lance Corporal, and served in the Vietnam war. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion. While serving in the Marines, he was awarded two Good Conduct medals, and he was a Rifle M14 Marksman. He also participated in the Presidential Inauguration of President Lyndon B. Johnson.
Most notable about Griff was his love for his wife and family. He thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated every minute that he had with them and always told them how much he loved them.
One of his greatest gifts was his sense of humor. He was always able to make everyone laugh and was often the life of the party. His favorite joke that he was well known for was “Fred the Head.” Those who knew him will miss him greatly.
A Celebration of Life gathering with be held on Saturday, September 23 from 1-4pm at Jac's Cekola's on Westnedge in Portage.
