Richard Minton MD, of Racine, died December 20, 2016 at Shorelight Memory Care of Siena on the Lake.

Richard was born in Grand Rapids, MN on Sept 10, 1922, the son of Walter and Julia (MacDonald) Minton. He was a graduate of St. John’s University in St Cloud Minnesota, and Marquette Medical School in Milwaukee. Following a fifteen month internship at Milwaukee County Hospital, he was inducted into the Army and stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. Almost immediately he received orders for an assignment with an Atomic Energy Commission project on the Eniwetok atoll. His unit spent nearly a year there preparing an environment that would allow the commission to study the effects of an atomic bomb on structures placed at various distances from the explosion. While there, he witnessed two atomic bomb detonations near the island of Enjibe.

Back in Honolulu Richard met Ruth, whom he married after a whirlwind courtship. Following his stint in the army and his residency at the Milwaukee VA hospital, he took a two year position at the Gorgas Hospital in the Panama Canal Zone to study tropical medicine. They then settled in Racine with the newly formed Kurten Medical Group, where he spent most of his medical career. Always interested in the administrative side of medical practice, Richard served on many boards and was instrumental in shaping the medical community in Racine, culminating in the construction of All Saints Medical facility. He finished his career by spending several years as the Medical Director at Modine Manufacturing Company.

Richard spent his retirement days playing golf, following his love of history by writing many articles about Racine for the Racine Historical Society and tending to his gardens. He was a faithful volunteer for Meals on Wheels and a rabid Packer fan. He enjoyed traveling, especially when it involved a family reunion.

Richard is survived by his wife Ruth, three daughters and one son – Susan (Anderson) and her husband Harvey of Duluth, MN, Stephen and his wife Patrice of Andover, MA, Mary of Racine, and Laura (White) and her husband Tim of Scituate, MA, eight grandchildren, Kyle, Keith, Alexandra, Jake, Elizabeth, Matthew, Jessica and Liam, and three great-grandchildren, Maya, Brynn, and Anya.

A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, December 27, 2016, 3:00 P.M. at Siena Center Chapel, 5635 Erie Street. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Tuesday at Siena Center Chapel from 1:00 P.M. until time of service at 3:00 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels program and/or Hospice Alliance. For directions and online guestbook, please visit Maresh-Meredith and Acklam Funeral Home website.

The family wishes to thank Hospice Alliance, as well as all of staff at Shorelight Memory Care facility for their loving care and kindness to Richard during his time with you.
