Nick Asma

Entered his eternal home on Tuesday February 27, 2018 while at the Crystal Woods assisted living facility. Nick was born in Andijk, The Netherlands on July 29, 1927 to Willem and Wijntje (Trompetter) Asma. After five years of German occupation of The Netherlands during World War II, Nick was drafted at age 18 into the Dutch Marine Corps and served in The Netherlands and Indonesia. After honorable discharge, He immigrated to Maryland to join his family. He later settled in Kalamazoo, where he worked for the United States Postal Service for 27 years, retiring in 1992. Nick had an expansive knowledge of Dutch history that he loved to share with others. He served God throughout his life as a faithful member of Christian Reformed churches in The Netherlands, Maryland, Comstock, and most recently, in Kalamazoo at Third Christian Reformed Church. Nick was married to Lois Wilkinson on January 6, 1975, and they enjoyed many wonderful trips together. Lois preceded nick in death on December 26, 2009. He was also preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Elizabeth (Kees) Groenewegen and Jacoba Den Hartigh; and brothers, Neil, Jacob, and John. Nick is survived by sisters, Gre (Piet) Visscher, Marianne (Bert) Vandentop, and Janie (Chuck) Quist; brother, Albert (Mary) Asma; sisters-in-law, Donna Asma, Nancy Asma, and Dinah; and brother-in-law, Peter Den Hartigh; as well as many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Third Christian Reformed Church, 2400 Winchell Ave, Kalamazoo on Wednesday at 1:00pm. Friends may greet the family from 12:00 to 1:00pm at the church prior to the service. A luncheon will follow at church, with private interment in Mt. Ever-Rest North Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Third Christian Reformed Church, or the Kalamazoo Christian Schools.
