Life Story / Obituary

Nancy Acuña, youngest daughter of Louis and Gertrude (Boeshaar) Acuña, both deceased, passed away suddenly on June 3, 2016 at Borgess Medical Center following surgery. She was 66 years old. Nancy received the greater part of her education at two private residential Catholic schools – first in Chicago and later in Northville, Michigan. At age 18 she moved back home to Kalamazoo and subsequently took up a happy life of travel with her parents to Arizona and Florida – usually with the family dog, Trixie, in tow. Following the death of her father, Nancy relocated to Lansing as part of her brother Robert’s busy household amid a crowd of adolescent nieces and nephews. Later she moved to adult foster care and with additional training began earning a paycheck – much to her delight. From the workshop, to the laundry, and finally to McDonald’s and Burger King, she found a place and a purpose. This provided her with the opportunity for numerous shopping trips with her sisters. Nancy became quite the clotheshorse. In 2009 Nancy returned to the Kalamazoo area to be near her sister, Donna, and ultimately moved to Evelyn’s care, a foster home where she was surrounded by roommates and caregivers who supported and cherished her. It can be said that Nancy was never happier than when she could share meals and movies, music and songs and TV shows with her family and friends. The years of her life were filled with cards and lunches out with her Lansing sister, Jean, and presents and photos and dog tales from the “far away” sister, Karen in Tucson. Weddings and graduations and new born babies added to her anticipation and joy in family events. Nancy was born on May 15, 1950 into a family of four older siblings who survive her; Jean (David – deceased) Wank of Dimondale, Robert (Donna Ethel – deceased) Acuña of Charlotte, Karen (Robert) Clemens of Tucson, Arizona and Donna (Richard) Mather of Richland. All Nancy’s life these four siblings and their spouses and children kept her close and shared holidays, birthdays, and special events with her. During her lifetime Nancy encountered many challenges which she met with an accepting disposition and a loving spirit. Memorial contributions may be made to Center for Disability Services (CDS), 834 King Highway, Suite 114; Kalamazoo, MI 49001. Family and friends are invited to gather and enjoy refreshments on Saturday, August 27 at 3:00pm at Betzler Life Story Funeral Homes, 6080 Stadium Drive; Kalamazoo (269) 375-2900. Nancy is greatly missed and gently mourned by her extended family and friends.
