Michael Stanley Johnson passed away peacefully on January 7, 2021 at the age of 77. He was born in Decatur, Illinois in 1943. The oldest of five children, and only son of Lonnie (H.L) and Sarah Johnson. Michael and his parents moved from Decatur, IL to Detroit, MI for a short while before moving to Kalamazoo. Michael attended Allen Chapel A.M.E since he was a young boy. He grew up in Kalamazoo and made many friends. He attended Lincoln Elementary and graduated in 1962 from Old Central. He attended KVCC, and completed his Tool and Die Maker apprenticeship. Michael worked at Brundage in Kalamazoo, MI briefly before starting his employment at GM where he was employed for 35 years. While employed at GM he worked as a Tool and Die Maker. Michael was very involved with his union Local 488, were he served as Vice President for 2 terms. He was also served as editor of the Local 488 News. On April 30, 1966 Michael married the love of his of his life Shirley, and they enjoyed 54 years of marriage, while building a beautiful life, and raising 4 children. You could find Michael winning a game of pool or listening to music, traveling with his wife, or enjoying life on the lake. He most enjoyed spending time with his family, and was known for his Fourth of July picnics. Michael could also be found in his garage where he created beautiful wood furniture for his family in his own Watermelon Wood Shop. He also made DVDs and CDs in his own Watermelon Studios. He also kept a beautiful yard that he spent many hours manicuring, which he loved. Michael loved to read and educated himself on many subjects. He was passionate in what he believed in, and was very good at making people laugh with his charming sense of humor. He was admired by many, he influenced young people as he always had a piece of advice. A walking example of hard work, and discipline. He will be missed by so many. Michael was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Rhonda Boyd, and is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Shirley Johnson; Debra Kemp of Windsor, Ontario CA, Pamela Fontenot (Andre) of Regina, Saskatchewan CA, Michelle Moore (David) of Kalamazoo, and Michael S Johnson II, also of Kalamazoo. 13 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Sisters: Freda (Buddy) Hannah, Susan Johnson, Karen (Tyrone) Foster and Kim Marshall all of Kalamazoo MI. Michael is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
