Passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, July 13, 2018. Marty "Sonny" was born October 28, 1929 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, son of Henry and Elizabeth (Triestram) Johnson. During the Korean War he served with the U.S. Army. He had been a lifelong Kalamazoo area resident and owned/operated his construction company, Martin H. Johnson & Son, for over 15 years before retiring the company and going to work with National City Bank for 10 years and retiring from there. There were few things he enjoyed more than making others laugh, time spent with family and serving the church. He was known for a firm and hearty handshake. Marty was a member of Faith Reformed Church and most recently, Southridge Reformed Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Jennifer VanderRoest; daughter, Maryann VanderRoest; 2 grandsons, Noah and Nicholas Bonnewell; siblings, Cora Snyder, Ike Johnson, Henrietta "Tootsie" Ball, Henry "Hank" Johnson, Billy Johnson, Martha Wakefield. On January 20, 1951, he was united in marriage to Barbara J. (Holmes) Johnson who survives. Also surviving, 3 children, Linda Dunn of Vicksburg, Mike Johnson of Clearwater, Florida, and Carole (Dave) Bonnewell of Portage; a son-in-law, David VanderRoest of Clearwater, Florida; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Betty Lash of Kalamazoo, Joan Bonnema of Kalamazoo, and Annie (Mark) Martin of North Carolina; a brother, Jerry (Diana) Johnson of Florida; many nieces and nephews. Services will be held 11 o'clock Wednesday at Southridge Reformed Church, 6726 Texas Dr. with a luncheon to follow. Visitation will be 6-8pm Tuesday at the church. Private burial will take place in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Southridge Reformed Youth Group.
