Life Story / Obituary

Marie E. DuCoin, 75, passed away peacefully at Independence Village, Petoskey, surrounded by her loving husband and family, following a long illness with Alzheimer’s. Marie was formerly of Traverse City and Grosse Pointe Woods.

Marie was born June 18, 1939, in Ishpeming, to George and Viola (Peterson) Murtonen and graduated from Highland Park High School.

Marie attended Eastern Michigan University, where she studied nursing before meeting the love of her life, Norman D. DuCoin. They were united in marriage on July 28, 1961, in Detroit.

Marie enjoyed working for Hope Village of Traverse City, loved volunteering for the Dennos Museum Center and formerly worked at Jacobson’s store for the home, where she was engaging with clients and offered a practical approach on design themes to create balance and harmony in life.

She loved to make crafts, play board games, garden and send cards to friends and family for every occasion.

She had a wonderful sense of humor and liked to make people smile. Her kindness and tender thoughtfulness was never ending. Marie was a loving and devoted wife, mother, nana and friend whose beautiful blue eyes, infectious smile and hugs will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Marie enjoyed organizing fund-raisers for the public school system, whether by selling geraniums or planning a bazaar for education, a cause that was near and dear to her. In the summers she would plan an adventure with her family to see historical sites and explore the United States in all it’s splendor.

Marie is survived by Norman, an amazingly doting husband of 53 years; her children, Jon, of Brighton, Karla (Edward Stokel, M.D.), of Walloon Lake, Petoskey, Sarah, of Chicago, and Julie, of Brighton; and her pride and joy grandchildren, Brock and Reese (Jon and Julie), Alexis, Victoria, Austin and Vanessa (Karla and Edward).

Marie was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Carolyn Allen.

The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Independence Village, Petoskey, for a beautiful facility and caring staff, Senior Home Care Solutions, Petoskey, for their loving, dedicated and excellent care, Hospice of Little Traverse Bay for their outstanding support and comfort measures and Vaughn Seavolt of Life Story Funeral Home for serving to bring mom “home.”

A private memorial service will take place at a later date with a final resting place in White Chapel Cemetery, Troy.

Memorial contributions may be made to Little Traverse Bay Humane Society, 1300 West Conway Road, Harbor Springs, MI 49740.
