Margie Shugars

Margie A. Shugars, age 81, of Portage, MI passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2017. Margie was born in Grand Rapids on October 15, 1935 to the late Willard and Mildrith (Koon) Smith. She was a 1953 graduate of Hartford High School. On June 13, 1954 she married Wayne D. Shugars who survives. Margie is also survived by a son, Michael (Ramona) Shugars; two grandchildren, Samantha (Trevor Smith) Shugars and Christina (Shawn) Matos and one great-grandson, Devin Matos; brother, Jimmy E. Smith; sister in-law, Ann Smith along with several nieces and nephews. Margie was preceded in death by brother, Robert L. Smith, sister in-law, Rosemary Hastings-Smith and her canine friend, Charlie. She worked as a secretary for many years at her husband's business, Shugars Heating and Sheet Metal. Margie loved to read and enjoyed bowling and golfing as well as spending time at her summer home in Traverse City. She was a member of the Portage Moose Lodge, Schoolcraft Eagles, Portage AMBUCS and The Beacon Club. A funeral service will be held at Joldersma and Klein Funeral Home on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 11:00 AM. Private interment will take place at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan or a charity of one's choice, c/o the funeral home.
