Margaret Weiss

Margaret Ann (Merchant) Weiss of Kalamazoo, MI passed away on Monday, February 26, 2018 at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence at the age of 89. Margaret was born in Kalamazoo on March 30, 1928, the daughter of the late Ernest L. Tozer and Abby Jane (VanKirk) Tozer. She spent her career working as a teacher for Portage Public Schools, where she taught elementary grades and music. She retired after 23 years of service. She was a member of Portage First United Methodist Church, where she served as the organist for over fifty years. She was most recently a member of Portage Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. She was married to Ervin L. Merchant on June 21, 1947, who preceded her in death in 2001. She later was married to Milo Weiss, who preceded her in death in 2006. She is survived by her children, Thomas (Terry) Merchant and Bruce (Karen) Merchant; eight beloved grandchildren, Andrea (Josh) Carr, Morgan (Lisa) Merchant, Mitchell (Erika) Merchant, Margaret (Andrew) Simon, Michael Bova, Brent (Anne) Merchant, Michal Vanderberg and Jessica (Chris) Whitaker; thirteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Dr. James (Bonnie) Tozer; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two children, Carol Schafer and Steven Merchant; and one sister, Virginia Tozer. Friends may visit with the family from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 East Centre Ave., Portage, MI 49002. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 5, 2018 at Southern Heights Church, 4141 Hillandale, Kalamazoo, MI 49008. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Kalamazoo Gospel Mission or Rose Arbor Hospice Residence.
