Lester Dono Kirby Died October 24, 2017

Atlanta, Ml -

Don Kirby passed away at home surrounded by his family, in Traverse City, from Alzheimer’s at the age of 89.

He was born in Detroit on November 7, 1927. He was an Army Veteran of both the Korean War and WWII. He married Donna Smith in 1952 and they lived in Royal Oak for 30 years, where they raised their two children. Don retired to Atlanta Michigan with his wife, after 41 years as an interior painter and decorator. They had recently moved to Traverse City to be closer to their daughter Susan during his illness.

His hobbies over the years included canvas painting, stained glass art, hunting, camping and wandering the woods with his beloved dogs. He also served for many years as a Master Scout Leader and Leader of an Explorer Group with his son Kerry.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Donna Kirby, of Traverse City, Son Kerry Kirby (Stephanie) of Boulder CO., Daughter Susan Stegmeyer (Karl) of Traverse City and his beloved dog Daisy.

He had 5 grandchildren: Tao Stegmeyer, Samantha Szydzik, Megan Konstanzer, Jennifer Jaeger and Nicole Kirby, as well as 5 great-grandchildren: Emma, Emmett, Kylie, Harlow and Baby Girl Jaeger.

"He was a great man, with great integrity, who loved his family above all. His humor, wit and wisdom will be missed. And we will take all of that love and wisdom with us as we journey forward in our lives". Susan Stegmeyer, daughter.

The family is being served by The Life Story Funeral Home in Traverse City. Cremation has already taken place.
