Life Story / Obituary

Print

Lawrence Dale Smith, born July 31, 1936, passed away in the early morning of April 27, 2024. He was surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and his beloved wife, Barbara, in his final hours.

Lawrence, affectionately called Larry, was a lifelong resident of Holland. He served in the Navy from 1956-1960 when he was honorably discharged, which were some of the proudest years of his life. He loved to share stories of his time in the service, reveling in the time spent aboard his ship, and the experience of seeing the world and serving his country. Shortly after returning to Holland, Larry and Barbara married on January 27, 1961. They were the parents of Wanda Kay, Kimmie Marie, Dwain Alan and Julie Lynn. Throughout his life, Larry had a love for music, playing guitar and singing karaoke songs by some of his favorite singers, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. He was a talented artist, and enjoyed sharing his passions with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents Dale and Emma Smith, daughter Wanda Kay, and son Dwain Alan. He is survived by the love of his life of 63 years, Barbara Smith, daughter Kim (Ron) Rankins, daughter Julie (Bobby) Segovia, seven grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, two Great-Great-Grandchildren, and sister Linda Moomey.

Visitation will be from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm, Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at Dykstra Funeral Home-Mulder Chapel, 188 West 32nd Street in Holland. A graveside service with military honors will follow at 2:30 pm at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, 994 Paw Paw Drive in Holland.
