Lawrence “Larry” Bowhuis, age 76, died September 11, 2017 at Spectrum Hospital. He

was born on November 25, 1940 to Bernard and Frances (Hansen) Bowhuis.

Larry graduated from Central High School and from cook school at Fort Lee, VA then

served ten years in the Army National Guard and Army reserve. He was a very active

member of Blessed Sacrament parish where he was a Eucharistic Minister, parish

council member and a Cursillo representative, along with a member of Knights of

Columbus Bishop Plagens Council 3104 where he was Grand Knight. He was also

founding Grand Knight of Blessed Sacrament Council 13391, fourth degree Knight in

Bishop Edward D. Kelley Assembly where he was a Faithful Navigator and Color Corp

Commander. Larry also volunteered at St. Vincent DePaul, the Grand Rapids Home for

Veterans, an avid bowler, bridge player, hunter, fisherman and member of the Gaelic

League of West Michigan. He was also an avid reader. Larry was well a kind, generous

person who was well loved. He will be remembered in a rosary and a Knights of

Columbus Honor Guard.

On April 20, 1963, he married MaryAnn Rasmussen who, along with his parents,

preceded him in death. He is survived by three sons: Lawrence Jude “LJ” (Bobbie)

Bowhuis of Howard City, MI, Patrick (Barry Stradtner) Bowhuis of Mishawaka, IN and

Christopher (Tracy) Bowhuis of Waynesville, MO., four grandchildren: Mary (Brian)

Waltermeyer, Curtis “CJ”, Jessica and Christina Bowhuis, two great grandchildren and

six siblings: Gerri (Ted) Simons, Barbara Glenboski, Linda (Bill) Carlon, Patricia

(Charlie) Steen, Mary (Ed) Ochalek and Bernie (Karen) Bowhuis.

Visitation will be held at the Heritage Life Story Funeral Home Van Strien, Creston

Chapel, Plainfield Ave., on Thursday, September 14 th . from 2-4pm and 6-8pm where a

rosary will be prayed at 7:30pm. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Blessed

Sacrament Parish on Friday, September 15 th . at 11am where he will lie in state from 10-

11am. Followed by Military Honors. Private burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery

in Grand Rapids, MI. Contributions may be made to the Grand Rapids Home for

Veterans or Blessed Sacrament.
