Karen Ann Kortman, 62, of Kalamazoo went home to be with her Lord on October 16, 2020. She was born September 19, 1958 in Kalamazoo to Betty (Geverink) and the late Raymond Bayer. Karen is a 1976 graduate of Loy Norrix High School. She began work as a dental assistant for Dr. Reoch and Dr. VanderMeulen. She then worked at the Upjohn Company from 1987-1994 as an administrative assistant. From 1994-2008, she served as the secretary at Oakwood Bible Church, where she was a member, before she and her husband purchased Bernina Sewing Center and Quilt Shop. Karen was a piano player for most of her life and played at church, as well as for the Musical Messengers and the Singing Crusaders. She also belonged to many quilting groups. She was preceded in death by her father, Raymond Bayer; a brother born sleeping, Roger Bayer; stepfather, Ward Fritz; parents-in-law, Garrett and Virginia Kortman; and brother-in-law, James Kortman. Karen is survived by her loving husband, Gary L. Kortman; son, Andrew L. (Jacki Jackson) Kortman; daughter, Erin (Dan) Campbell; grandchildren, Maxwell L. Kortman, Delaney, Brooklyn, and Kody Campbell; step-siblings, Douglas (Cathia) Fritz, Pamela (Bradley) Scott, Michael (Sandi) Fritz, Valerie (William) Orr, and Kimberly (Steven) Frost; brothers-in-law, Bob (Marilyn) and Don (Tammy Wilson) Kortman; sisters-in-law, Diane Kortman and Carol (Russ) VandenToorn; as well as many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Friday, October 23 at 2:00PM in the Worship Center at Centerpoint Church, 2345 North 10th Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49009. The family will greet friends one hour prior from 1-2:00PM. Masks and social distancing are required. A private graveside service will be held for the family at Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park South.
