Kamran S M.D. Naples, Fl formerly of Plainwell MOGHISSI, Kamran S. M.D. Naples, FL Formerly of Plainwell Kamran S. Moghissi, M.D., passed away peacefully in his Naples, FL home on Sunday December 12th, 2021, with family nearby. Born September 11, 1925 in Tehran, Iran to Ahmad and Monireh Moghissi, he was known by many nicknames, but "Papa" was one he adored most. Dr. Moghissi graduated from the University of Geneva School of Medicine in 1952. He subsequently completed his postgraduate and residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Surgery in England, and at Wayne State University Affiliated Hospitals, where he joined the School of Medicine faculty in 1962 and later became a professor emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Moghissi was an internationally known innovator and researcher in the fields of reproductive medicine, fertility enhancement, and regulation. He authored and co-authored more than 360 peer-reviewed publications and edited and co-edited 17 books. He was awarded numerous research grants from the World Health Organization and National Institutes of Health and served as chair of the Department of OB-GYN at Wayne State University and Detroit Medical Center. From 1990-91, he served as president of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. He also served as president of the Society of Reproductive Endocrinologists from 1989-90 and as the first ever president of the Michigan Society for Reproductive Endocrinology. Additionally, he was a member of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Fertility and Maternal Health Drug Advisory Committee, a member of the the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development's Population Research Committee, a consultant to the World Health Organization, and chair of the National Institute of Health's Reproductive Endocrinology Study Section. Dr. Moghissi established the first Comprehensive Infertility Clinic at Wayne State University and the first successful In Vitro Fertilization program in the state of Michigan. Wayne State University honored him in 1997 by establishing the Kamran S. Moghissi, M.D., Chair in Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility. On January 2, 1952 Kamran married the love of his life, Ida Laura (Iti). They would go on to build a fulfilling life together until she preceded him in death in December of 2012. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Diana Weaver and his sister, Mina Buchs. Surviving are his daughter, Soraya Coccimiglio; his four grandchildren, Laurelle Justus, Joe (Paige) Weaver, Paul Weaver, and Andrew Weaver; and his five great-grandsons, Cameron, Jackson, Gabriel, Luke, and James. He is also survived by his two brothers, Dr. Keyvan Moghissi and Dr. Arisalan Moghissi, and his two sisters, Minou Chmouliovsky and Chahla Vaudaux, as well as many nieces and nephews. Dr. Moghissi enjoyed reading, keeping up with current affairs, listening to classical music, traveling, and most of all spending time with loved ones. Friends may meet with the family on Sunday, December 19 from 12:00-2:00 pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, 3926 South 9th Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49009. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am Monday, December 20 at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to The Kamran S.
