Obituary
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Judith Margaret Murphy, lovingly known as Judy, who departed peacefully on March 31, 2024. Born in Akron, Ohio, on July 22, 1933, Judy was the cherished daughter of the late George W. Longwell III and Margaret Allison Root. Judy was predeceased by her brother, George W. Longwell IV, affectionately known as Punch.
After losing her parents at a young age, she was lovingly raised by her grandmother, Mary Root, in Paw Paw, Michigan. Judy attended Kemper Hall High School for Girls, graduated from Western Michigan University and furthered her education by earning a master's degree (+30) at Michigan State University. She was a devoted educator, spending her career enriching the lives of first and second graders at Comstock North Elementary School until her retirement in 1992. Her legacy is one of nurtured potential and inspired young minds.
Beyond her career, Judy was a gifted artisan, celebrated for her exquisite handmade quilts and her intricate collection of miniatures. Her artistic spirit and meticulous craftsmanship brought beauty and joy to all who knew her.
Judy leaves behind her son, Sean, daughter-in-law Sara, and two grandchildren, Alex and Luca, who will miss her warmth, wisdom, and creativity deeply. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Music Fund at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Judy's memory.
Judy's life will be honored at a service to be held at the church on Saturday, July 20, at 11 a.m. She will be interred at the church's columbarium. A reception will follow at St. Luke's, where family and friends can gather to share memories and celebrate Judy's life.
