Judith Meernik

Judith Ann Meernik (nee Louks) was born December 23, 1922 and passed into God’s loving arms after having lived a long and much loved life on March 11, 2019. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Dirk “Richard" Nicolaas Meernik, her brother David “Jerry” Louks, and her mother and father, Harry and Mary Marguerite (nee Lemon) Louks of Grand Rapids, Michigan. She is survived by her daughter Mary Meernik (wife Janelle McWethy) of Ann Arbor and granddaughter Jennifer McWethy Richardson (great grandchildren Dustin and Arianne Richardson) of Columbia, MD; her son Paul Meernik (wife Mary Terese) of Traverse City, Michigan and grandchildren Nathan Meernik (Seattle, Washington), Brent and Kaitlyn Malaski (great granddaughter Elise) of Traverse City, Timothy Meernik (Denver, Colorado); and Clare Meernik (husband Eric Szymanski) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and son Jim Meernik (wife Kimi King) and granddaughter Marlene Meernik of Denton, Texas.

Judy was a lifelong resident of Michigan, having lived most of her life in Grand Rapids, but also lived in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii when her husband Richard was stationed there during the Korean War and later lived in Ann Arbor, Chelsea, and Traverse City, Michigan. Judy lived through the Great Depression, World War II, and saw so many changes over the course of her 96+ years. As her children grew up she volunteered and began working again after her children were raised. She went on numerous vacations and camping trips with Mary and Jan throughout the US and Canada. Judy had a special love for Mackinac Island when the lilacs were in bloom and found joy in simple things like taking walks, gardening, and playing games with friends and family. She had a wonderful sense of humor, was kind to everyone she met and read her Bible daily. Her family will miss her warm spirit and gentle love.
