Joyce E. Reed, of Schoolcraft passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at the age of 95. Joyce was born on March 12th, 1922 to Ervin and Bulah Calvert in Kalamazoo. She spent most of her life our on the Schoolcraft prairie either with her parents working on their farm, or after marrying Charles Reed farming full time. Prior to her marrying Chuck, she worked in Kalamazoo at Woolworth Department store and The Upjohn Company.

She married Charles Reed on April 19, 1942. Prior to Chuck being deployed overseas for the US Navy during WWII.

Joyce enjoyed animals, she had a couple of horses over the years, these were rescue horses, before the term took off, like it is known today, along with several dogs over the years.

When she and Chuck were farming along with her parents, she enjoyed disking and dragging the fields prior to planting with her Farmall 656 tractor. She could tell you many stories of the times doing this task.

Joyce took care of her parents. When her mom had the start of Alzheimer’s, she took care of her full time until the doctors told her that she could no longer do it. The hardest day was putting her mom into a nursing home.

Her father passed away in September of 1974, and her mother in 1978.

Chuck and Joyce continued to farm full time, until retiring in 1982. Still living on their farm, she traded farming with her Farmall 656 to mowing their four acres with her many John Deere tractors over the years.

Chuck passed away on October 2, 1987.

Joyce is survived by a nephew and niece, Bill and Bonnie Reed, of Concord, CA, and the person that was like a grandson to her, Howard Tripp, Jr. her best friend Betty Tripp preceded her in death one year ago.

A graveside service will be held for Joyce on Friday, 11am at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Schoolcraft. The family is being assisted by the Life Story Funeral Home, 409 S. Main, Vicksburg, (269-649-1697).
