John Richard “Dick”, age 83, passed away at home on December 1 in beautiful Naples, FL, what he called “Heaven’s Waiting Room”. Son of John and Marie, he was predeceased by his sister Marilyn and wife Betty. He was lucky enough to find love again with Mary Jo Dailey and they shared 8 wonderful years together. He leaves behind Amy (Chris) Kirkbride, Eric (Jenny) Brandstatter and Katy (Matt) DuBois; grandchildren Alex, Cassady, Claire, John, Abby and Elisabeth; great granddaughter Isabella, sister Nancy Kruer and brother Bob (Pat) Brandstatter, sister-in-law Mary Knape and brothers-in-law Jerry (Pat) Berles, Bill Berles and Frank (Marty) Berles, many nieces and nephews, as well as many cousins in Germany. He was welcomed into Mary Jo’s family and enjoyed many good times with them – Dr. Mark (Moira) Dailey, Cathleen (Chris) Reardon and Michael (Julia) Dailey, and 13 grandchildren.

He graduated from St. Mary’s, Catholic Central and the University of Detroit and served as a pilot in the US Navy. He spent his career as a stockbroker and certified financial planner and established a successful wealth management company of his own. He served on many charitable and educational boards over the years. Over the years, he served his church as a lector, Eucharistic lay minister, choir member and Garden Angel. He instilled in his children a strong faith and hard work ethic and the importance of a firm handshake. His generosity touched his children, family, friends and various organizations over the years. He viewed these opportunities to give as a way to thank God for what he had.

He loved to entertain and graciously hosted countless dinners and parties for family and friends over the years, which always included many bottles of good wine. He enjoyed traveling and visited many beautiful countries and cities with family and friends. He especially enjoyed boating in Charlevoix, skiing in Colorado and visiting wineries in Napa Valley. He excelled at skiing, biking, sailing, and golfing. He was a voracious reader, especially non-fiction. His family is very grateful to Mary Jo for her excellent care, especially these past 5 months.

Relatives and friends may meet the family on Friday, December 9 from 2-4 and 7-9 at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home, 2120 Lake Michigan Dr. NW. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 10 at 11:00 am at Holy Spirit Church, 2230 Lake Michigan Drive.
