John J. Longo

Surrounded by his family, John J. Longo “Poopa”, age 78, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at Ascension All Saints Medical Center. John was born in Racine, August 11, 1939, son of the late Nick and Caroline (Nee: Cacciotti) Longo.

On September 19, 1959 he was united in marriage to Shirley M. Proffit. John owned and operated Longo Masonry. For the past seventy years you could find John selling Christmas trees with his family at the Longo tree lot on Douglas Avenue. He enjoyed raising horses, had a great love for his dogs, and considered himself “the best cowboy around”. He will be fondly remembered for his love of hunting, hard work ethic, and his generous heart. More than anything he loved entertaining family and friends.

He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Shirley; his sons and daughters-in-law, John (Gina) Longo Jr. of Cross Creek, FL, Troy (Stacey) Longo of Union Grove, Jeffrey (Mary) Longo of Raymond, Dean Longo of Union Grove; 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren with another one expected in January; sisters and brothers, Jean Draeger, Nick Longo, Carolyn (Wally) Ross, Cathy (Walter “Topper”) Noonan, all of Racine; sister-in-law, Carol Meyer of Racine; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph; and brother-in-law, Richard Draeger.

Funeral services will be held at Maresh-Meredith & Acklam Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, 11:00 A.M. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Garden Mausoleum, Hwy 32. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. and Tuesday at the funeral home from 10:00 A.M. until time of service at 11:00 A.M.
