John J. Isaacs, age 84, of Irons passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2018 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. He was born July 5, 1934 in Allegan to Frank and Stella (Benzer) Isaacs. John graduated from Portage Central High School in 1953. He enlisted in the US Army right after high school and he served his country in Germany as a tank driver. John married Shirley Ann Loehr on February 9, 1955 in Kalamazoo. Together they raised two sons in the Kalamazoo area. John worked as a carpenter for Crown Vantage for over 40 years. His carpentry skills went far beyond his occupation. When he wasn't working for Crown Vantage he was building homes for his family and others. He also built many doll houses and bird houses. John truly loved working with wood. He also loved spending time in nature; everything from fishing and mushroom hunting to snowmobiling. He and his dogs spent many hours hiking the North Country trail, one of his favorite hikes. John will be greatly missed by his wife, Shirley, his sons, John (Jayne) Isaacs of Scotts, MI and Monty Isaacs of Irons, his four grandchildren, Laura, Paul, Samantha, and Jessica, and his three great grandchildren, Lillabeth, Clover, and Landon. Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by his 12 siblings. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and John will be laid to rest at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek. Memorial contributions in John's name may be directed to the Alzheimer's Foundation. Arrangements have been entrusted to Oak Grove Funeral Home of Ludington, www.oakgroveludington.com
