Joan Irene OReilly McNamara, of Traverse City, Mich., and formerly of Royal Oak,Mich., was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada on August 5, 1928, of Alice Hall OReilly and George Mayo OReilly. She passed away on Thursday, April 26, at the Grand Traverse Pavilion, surrounded by her family.

She was predeceased by her parents, by her husband Robert S. McNamara, and by her children Kathleen and Robert and great grandson Ronan.

She is survived by her sisters Virginia OReilly, Adrian, Mich., and Mary Patricia OReilly Rush (Christopher), Schenectady, N.Y., and by her children Virginia , Peggy, Dennis and Maureen(Jennifer Stark), and by 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Joan went to school at St Alphonsus School in Dearborn, Mich. And Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit. She and her family lived in Allen Park, Mich, Elyria, Ohio, Royal Oak, Mich., and Traverse City, Mich., where she was active in conservation issues regarding Long Lake and Bull Head Lake. Joan and her partners in Friends of Bullhead Lake were awarded Citizens of the Year by the Long Lake Association in 1999. Joan loved the woods and the waters, the flowers and the gardens of her world. She loved to travel and, have adventures.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 4 at Holy Redeemer Church in Detroit, followed by interment at Mt. Elliot Cemetery.
