Jane Ann Scheef, age 73, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at the Hospice Alliance Hospice House, Pleasant Prairie. Jane was born Dec 2, 1943 to Alvin and Minerva (VanderMark) Herman in Mobridge, SD. Jane grew up in Firesteel SD, graduated from Timber Lake High School in 1961, and received a Music Education degree with an English minor from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD in 1965.

She taught K-12 vocal music for 2 years in Lennox, SD and then traveled to Nepal for six months on an exchange program sponsored by International Farm Youth Exchange, a part of the National 4-H exchange program. After returning, she taught 7th-12th grade general/vocal music in Manly, IA for 5 years. There she met her husband Allen Scheef and they married August 12th, 1972 in Timber Lake, SD. They moved to Racine, WI in 1973 where Jane began teaching private piano lessons which continued for over 40 years.

Throughout her life, Jane was an avid sewer and crafts person. If it involved needle and thread, she had to try it. She enjoyed entering her projects in the Racine County Fair and received many awards.

Music was a big part of her life. She touched many lives as a piano teacher and accompanist. She was a charter member of the Racine Music Teacher Association, served on the boards for Racine Chorale, Lighthouse Lacers, Horlick Vocal Music Parents Association, local 4-H club, Racine Kiwanis Youth Symphony and was state treasurer for WMTA for 9 years. Jane worked for H&R Block for over 20 years as an enrolled tax preparer and was also a volunteer tax preparer for AARP. As a member of St Rita's Catholic Church, she was a Reader, Cantor and member of the choir for over 40 years.

Jane loved many outdoor activities, especially camping. Many exciting and fun experiences were told around the family campfire. She also loved to bake and enjoyed sharing her trays of Christmas cookies.

Above all she loved her God and her family, they made her life.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents (Alvin & Minerva Herman), her oldest brother Thomas J Herman and SIL Barbara Herman. Jane is survived by her husband Allen, children Mark (Sutira) Scheef, Elizabeth Scheef (Nick Maness), grandchildren Alexander and Kathleen, brothers Gerald Herman of Brigham City Utah, Jay (Audrey) Herman of Mandan, ND, sister Catherine (Dennis) Bresee of Moorhead, MN, SIL Clara Ann Herman of Timber Lake, SD, SIL Lois Kesler of Fairmont, MN, BIL Ken (Barb) Scheef of Fairmont, MN, SIL Cheryl (Richard) Townsend of Aurora, OR, and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, May 6, 2017, 11:00 A.M. at St. Rita Catholic Church, 4339 Douglas Avenue, with Rev. Rich O’Leary officiating. ( Note: Sunday's Journal Times was a misprint ) Relatives and friends may meet with the family Saturday at the church from 9:30 A.M. until time of Mass at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Racine Literacy Council, Hospice Alliance of Pleasant Prairie, or Timber Lake Historical Society have been suggested.
