Life Story / Obituary

Deike, James Richland passed away Saturday morning, December 1, 2018 at his home surrounded by loved ones. Jim was born April 4, 1950 in Kalamazoo, the son of Gordon and Lillian (Trudeau) Deike. He graduated from Comstock High School in 1969. Jim was employed at four full time jobs during his life time: Fabri-Kal, Peter Eckrich & Sons, Ray Farms, and General Motors where he retired from in 2006.

Jim was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was joined in marriage to his wife of 45 years, Lindy (Denruyter) in July of 1973. Jim was preceded in death by his parents: Gordon and Lillian Deike. He is survived by his loving wife: Lindy; daughter: Sherri Alvey; son-in-law: Gabriel Alvey; granddaughter: Lillian Alvey; grandson: Benjamin Alvey; brother: Terry Deike; his extended family: Jeff, Ramon, Taylor, Megan Elwell; and many nieces and nephews.

Jim was a dedicated long time (29 years) K-Wings season ticket holder. Jim’s life centered around his family. He would attend every choir or band concert and sporting event for his daughter and grandchildren that he could. Jim loved playing cards and was a fierce double pinochle and euchre player. He enjoyed investigating out-of-the-way places while on vacations. He would drive and discover things that other people would miss. Jim enjoyed having friends and family over to the pool in the summer. Watching the kids having fun in the pool would make his day.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held Sunday December 9, 2018 at 2pm at the McCowen & Secord Family Funeral Homes, 5975 Lovers Lane Portage, MI 49002 (269-344-5600). In lieu of flowers, please send donations to his granddaughter’s softball team. Jim loved watching the team grow and develop. Make checks payable to The Michigan Rebels 06 softball team and send to 7864 E G Ave. Kalamazoo, Michigan 49048.

The family is being assisted by McCowen and Secord Funeral Homes, 5975 Lovers Lane Portage, MI 49002 (269-344-5600).
