Jacob Elzinga Jr

Elzinga, Jacob A., Jr. Portage Passed away Sunday afternoon, August 15, 2021 at Rose Arbor Hospice. Jake was born June 8, 1935 in Portage, MI the son of Jacob and Ida (Scheffers) Elzinga. On April 10, 1959 he was united in marriage to his loving wife of 58 years, Doris (Stricklin), who preceded him in death on April 29, 2017. Jake was also preceded in death by his parents; son Jeff; daughter Susan Jo; grandson, Jacob R.; and a brother Allen Elzinga. Jake graduated from Portage Central High School in 1953 and was fortunate to have been a business partner with Ed Hoeksema at Elzinga-Hoeksema Greenhouses for over 40 years. Ed was a life long friend. Jake was an avid fisherman. He loved blue gill fishing in lakes around Portage and fishing in the Gulf of Mexico in Florida. Jake also golfed for many years. More recently, Jake really enjoyed his Thursday card parties with his friends from church. He is survived by his sons, Mark Elzinga, Dan (Shelli) Elzinga; grandchildren, Amanda (Coty) Perin, Trevor Doxey, Gatlin Combs; and a nephew, Dale Elzinga. Friends may meet the family from 4:00-7:00pm Thursday, August 19 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, 411 E. Centre, Portage, MI 49002. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Friday, August 20 at Pathfinder Church, 8740 South Westnedge Ave. Interment will follow in Portage South Cemetery.
