84, of Kalamazoo, MI, died on Friday, July 19, 2019 following a brief illness. Born and reared in Chicago, Illinois to Horace Ward, Sr. and Idella (Atkins) Bulger, he was the youngest of six children. He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army. He attended the University of Illinois - Chicago to study pharmacy. Before retirement, he was a materials manager for more than twenty years. Mr. Bulger was an aficionado of jazz, intelligent political and social critic, and avid reader. A resident of Kalamazoo for more than 15 years, he was a Life Member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and attended local cultural and civic events. Surviving are his daughter, Stephanie Bulger (Glenn Oliver); son, Mark Bulger (Jamie); sister, Patricia Bell Phillips (Romeo); three grandchildren; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded by the death of immediate family members; his parents; and siblings Mildred Beatrice, Harold William, Charles Edward, and Josephine Leah. A Memorial Service for Mr. Bulger will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 1, 2019 at the: Harper Funeral Home, 521 Douglas Avenue, (269) 342-1000. According to his wishes, he will be cremated and interred at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI.
