Frederick Alfred Gainforth, 81, of Traverse City, died Saturday, January 6, 2018.

He was born on October 27, 1936 in Akron Twp, Tuscola County, to Alfred and Lola (Adams) Gainforth.

Fred graduated from Sebewaing High School in 1955. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army and served as an MP, stationed in Tokyo, Japan. He later returned to Sebewaing and married Carol Bounting on May 12, 1962. They moved to Traverse City in December of 1964 where he continued to live for the remainder of his life. Fred was a Deputy Sheriff for Grand Traverse County until his retirement in 1999.

Fred was a kind, compassionate, loving person who had many friends. He was quick to smile, make a joke, and loved to tease. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and bowling and liked listening to Elvis and Johnny Cash. Fred loved to eat out and was friendly to all he met.

Fred is survived by his children, Jim Gainforth of Kinross, Jay (Sue) Gainforth of Holland, and Julie Gainforth of Traverse City; Grandchildren Brandon and Anna Gainforth; former wife and caregiver, Carol (Ted) Roney; Several nieces and nephews, and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Brothers, Vern and Buck Gainforth; An infant sister, and nephew, Rick Gainforth.

The family would like to thank Fred’s doctors and their staff, and Shelley at Country Pleasures Assisted Living and the staff for the excellent care they gave Fred during his residence there.

Memorial Services will be held at noon on Saturday, January 13th, at Bayview Wesleyan Church, Traverse City. The family will greet friends starting at 11 am.
