Life Story / Obituary
Frank G. Burnham was born just as the United States was entering the "War to end all wars" - World War I. On a lighter side, US Rubber Co launched the "sneakers" boom with their introduction of "Keds" shoes and The Saturday Evening Post ran Norman Rockwell's first cover illustration. It was a time of great change for America , a time that shaped the lives of all Americans.
The lives of Lawrence and Emily (Lambert) Burnham were indeed changing as they prepared for the birth of their new baby. Frank Burnham was born on March 28, 1916. Frank was born in Dorr, Michigan, in Allegan County , but along with his parents and 5 siblings, Frank moved to Kalamazoo as a small boy.
Frank grew up under the shadow of the Great Depression, a time of hardship for many. Yet, most found enjoyment in listening to the radio, playing the new board games, and dancing to the sounds of the Big Bands. Frank was one of the lucky ones who were able to complete his schooling, graduating from Kalamazoo Central in 1934. He was also fortunate to find a job, working for the American National Bank in the maintenance department.
On November 30, 1940, Frank married his sweetheart, Marguerite Triestram. He affectionately called her "Brown", and together they became the proud parents of Barbara and Russ. Their family would grow to include 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Sadly, Marguerite passed away on February 25, 1983.
A year after getting married, Frank enlisted in the Army, serving overseas from 1941 to 1945. After being discharged, he continued working for American National Bank, as the Branch Maintenance Supervisor. Frank worked downtown and was the only employee to work for the bank for 50 years. He retired in 1984.
When not working, Frank spent his time as a beekeeper, and giving the sweet honey to friends and neighbors. He was also an accomplished vintner, growing his own grapes which he turned into delicious homemade wine.
A kind, generous man, Frank had a great sense of humor, traits that made him a good husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor.
