Age 95, died on Saturday, June 25, 2016. She was born on November 25, 1920 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Virgil and Jennie (Kridler) Smith. On October 4, 1940, she married Bill Akker and he preceded her in death on October 20, 1977. Fern was an avid bowler, enjoyed sewing and was an animal lover. Above all else, Fern will be remembered for her ability to laugh and joke around. Services for Fern will be at 11 am on Friday at the Life Story Funeral Home, Betzler – Kalamazoo; 6080 Stadium Dr (375-2900). The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Cremation will follow the services and burial will take place in Almena Cemetery. Fern is survived by her sister, Vernice Henson; and 5 nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her two brothers: Larry and Vernon Smith and a niece.
