Eva Marie Spencer (Mazer), 62, passed away at her home surrounded by family in Kalamazoo, Michigan, September 20, 2019, following a battle with cancer. Eva was born on March 14, 1957 to Dr. Gilbert and Joyce (Korek) Mazer in Cleveland, Ohio. Eva lived in Washington, Illinois, Arizona and North Dakota with her family while her father was a university professor completing his graduate degrees. In 1965, the Mazer family moved to Kalamazoo when her father became a professor in the Counseling Department at Western Michigan University. Eva graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and attended Western Michigan University. Eva married Jeffrey Spencer on March 8, 1997 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Susan Mazer, nephew, Travis Mazer, step-father, Linden Griffin, Jr., step-mothers, Marcia Mazer, Mary Elaine Mazer, and father-in-law Jerry Spencer. She is survived by her husband Jeffrey Spencer, brother, Kevin (Wendy) Mazer, mother-in-law, Judy Spencer, sisters-in-law, Jenny (Michael) Purdy, Joany (John) Small, nieces and nephews, Mallory, Taylor, Trent (Kaitlin), Tate and Madison Mazer, Cassy and Corry Daoust, Cassie and Cody Small, Ryan Mullally (Michelle), Spencer, Jayson (Torie), Michaela, Maria and Elizabeth Purdy. Eva had a very successful 20-year Fashion Merchandising career working at Jacobson's first in Kalamazoo and then East Grand Rapids. She was one of the most sought out fashion consultants at both stores. Eva and Jeff lived in Grand Rapids for several years before returning to Kalamazoo in 2014. They enjoyed relaxing weekends spending time together and with many friends at their Gun Lake cottage. Eva loved to travel with Jeff. She came from a very artistic, talented family and enjoyed making jewelry and pottery. Eva cared deeply for her family and her many friends. Eva's silly, quirky sense of humor always made her friends and family laugh. She was very kind hearted to everyone and especially loved her little dogs. Health and fitness were always important to Eva and she enjoyed her power walking and loved to cook. Eva courageously fought Scleroderma for over three decades with a very positive attitude. Her loving husband Jeff, was totally devoted to her. He was by her side every step of the way, supporting her and researching every possible treatment available. Visitation will be held Friday, September 27, 5:30-8:00pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Home, 3926 S. 9th Street, with a praying of the Rosary at 7:30pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am, Saturday, September 28 at St. Monica Catholic Church, 534 W. Kilgore, Kalamazoo, with a luncheon to follow. On October 26th, Eva will be placed to rest at Hart Cemetery, West Main St., Hart, MI 49420. There will be a short ceremony at the grave site, followed by a celebration of life held at the Village Caf, 347 S. Hancock St., Pentwater, MI 49449.
