Westphal, Eugene N. "Gene" 11/16/1927 - 1/31/2018 Naperville, IL Eugene N. "Gene" Westphal, age 90, a resident of Naperville, IL since 2017, formerly of Chicago, Oak Park, IL and Kalamazoo, MI, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at his home in Naperville. He was born November 16, 1927 in Chicago. Beloved husband of Gertrude E. "Trudie" Westphal (nee Schraut), whom he married August 17, 1957, loving father of Mary (Kevin Kirwan) Westphal of Whitefish, MT, Jeanne (Richard) Sackleh of Naperville, Anne (David) Minnick of Dublin, OH, Teresa (Keith) McClow of Lombard, IL, Jim (Julie) Westphal of Naperville and the late Bill (Natasha) Westphal and the late Joe Westphal, adored grandfather of Caroline and Daniel Sackleh; Kaitlin and Lexi Minnick; Evan and Alison McClow; Dylan, Jaclyn and Alyssa Westphal, devoted son of the late Werner and Winifred (nee Fitzsimmons) Westphal, dear brother of the late Rosemary (the late Herb) Smith and the late Mary Louise (the late Bill) Cork, brother-in-law of Ann (Jack) Wall of Crystal Lake, IL, fond cousin, uncle, great-uncle and friend of many. Gene grew up on Chicago's South Side and was a 1945 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School. He earned a master's degree in Library Science from the University of Chicago and a doctorate in Instructional Technology from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Gene taught in the Chicago Public Schools, where he met his wife, Trudie, and later served as head librarian at Triton College in River Grove, IL from 1967-1991. Gene was a voracious reader and a member of MENSA. He enjoyed nature, exercising, watching movies and spending time with his family. Gene especially enjoyed his retirement on secluded Scott Lake in Bloomingdale, MI. Memorial Visitation Sunday, February 11, 2018, 1:00-4:00 PM at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, IL. A celebration of Gene's life will follow Sunday, 4:00 PM in the funeral home. Gene was a supporter of the LOSS Program.
