Gene passed peacefully into his eternal home on Tuesday, September 29 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Gene was born March 8, 1937 in Bangor, Michigan to William and Lucille (Hosier) Thomas.Gene graduated from Bangor High and Devry Technical School in Chicago, Illinois. Following graduation, he served in the United States Army. After discharge from the Army, Gene started work at Fetzer Broadcasting Company in Kalamazoo. He worked there for 44 years through the many changes in ownership.He enjoyed the technical work involved in running a television station retiring as Assistant Chief Engineer. Gene was a founding member of the Oakland Drive Church of Christ now called Oakland Drive Christian Church. He served the church in many ways as church treasurer, Elder, Bible School teacher and performing many quiet acts of service. Gene also served 22 years as treasurer and forwarding agent for Michiana Brazil Christian Mission. In 1964, Eugene united in marriage with the love of his life Barbara Pruett. They have been blessed with three children: Cheryl (Brian) Smith, Michael (Dawn) Thomas and David Thomas. Six grandchildren who were a delight to his life: Brandon (Ariel) Smith, A. J. Thomas, Chelsey Smith, Cassidy (Sam) Heid, Matthew Thomas and Joseph Thomas. Two great grand children added to his joy: Chloe and Daniel Thomas. Gene was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Robert Thomas and Gordon Thomas. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Visitation for Gene will be on Friday, October 2, 2020, from 5 p.m to 7 p.m. at Oakland Drive Christian Church, 7331 Oakland Drive, Portage, MI 49024.The Funeral Service for Gene will be held Saturday October 3, 2020 at Oakland Drive Christian Church starting at 11 a.m. Brandon Smith will officiate.
