Elsie Juanita (Fretter) Taylor, 83, of Mesick passed away February 27, 2015 at her son's home in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

She was born to Daniel and Margaret (Craft) Fretter on November 30, 1931, in Newaygo, Michigan.

She married David O. Taylor of Grant, Michigan on February 10, 1951. They began their life together in Grand Rapids, then Kent City, moving their family to Mesick in 1964.

Elsie worked at Four Star. She was very active in the local community, focusing her energy and passion on community projects. Her proudest accomplishments included lobbying and raising funds for Mesick’s baseball field, supporting the local Girl Scouts in their efforts to follow the National Christmas Tree from Michigan to Washington D.C. for the Tree Lighting Ceremony, and being one of the first women voted in as a member of the Mesick Lions Club.

Elsie loved donning her clown costume for the Mesick Mushroom Parade, writing a column for the Manistee Paper, and volunteering at the school. She supported and cared greatly for the underdog, and those in need of a helping hand. Later in life, she loved teaching Sunday-school. Elsie always carried a song in her heart. Often seen walking around Mesick or digging in her flower beds, Elsie’s happiest moments were those shared with neighbors, friends, and family around her kitchen table, visiting over a cup of coffee. She will be missed those who knew her and loved her.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, David; her daughter, Darlene Burton; parents and brother, John. She is survived by daughters, Sandy, of Traverse City, Debby (Asa, Mick) McCarthy, of Eastview, Kentucky; sons, Darell (Denise) of Amherst, New York, and Neal (Teresa) of Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was blessed with 10 grandchildren, 12 great children and one great-great grandchild.

A memorial service will be held 11am Saturday, April 25, 2015 at the Mesick United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Munson Hospice or the Hospice of your choice.
