Dr. Thomas A. Markus, DPM

Dr. Thomas A. Markus, age 56, passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at his residence. He was born in Racine, January 13, 1961, son of Robert and Alice (Nee: Herdt) Markus.

Dr. Tom graduated from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in 1988. From 1993 to 2015, he was Medical Director at Associated Foot and Ankle Specialists, Burlington, WI. He was Chairman of the Podiatry Credentialing Committee, 1990-1994. He was an active staff member of Aurora Burlington Memorial Hospital, 1994-present, and more recently, established his own in-home foot care practice.

Dr. Tom was as big a Green Bay Packers fan as they come, having attended over 50 games at Lambeau Field with his brother and friends, and demonstrating impeccable recall of every one. He also loved all things Wisconsin Badgers and spent countless hours from his early teens on both playing golf and being an avid fan of the game. He had several favorite pastimes and catch phrases, but two stand out: (1) Time spent at the Lakehouse with family, especially fishing and boating with his niece Lily and nephews Jack and Pete (“It doesn’t get any better than this!") and enjoyed local bands and hanging out with his many Racine and Janesville friends (“I’m just happy to be here!"). He was a die-hard Dave Matthews Band, Jimmy Buffett and Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, and loved area bands and friends Wally Cleaver, Untrained Laymen, Johnny Can’t Stop and The Whisper Stream.

He is dearly missed by his parents, Robert and Alice Markus; his siblings, Kathleen (Rick) Ambrose, Sue (Doug) Shireman, Tim (Lorie) Markus; niece, Lily Shireman, nephews Jack and Peter Shireman; step niece, Mindy (Mike) Ramig, step nephew, Eric (Jody) Ambrose; plus close relatives and dear friends far too many to mention.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, June 9, 2017, 11:00 A.M. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 6400 Spring Street, with Rev. Terrance A. Huebner officiating. Relatives and friends may informally meet with the family Friday at the church from 10:00 A.M. until time of Mass at 11:00 A.M. Casual attire is welcome, as cargo pants and long sleeve tees were Dr. Tom’s suit of choice. Memorials may be made to the Wisconsin Parkinson Association to honor his beloved mother Alice or the Racine Campus/Wisconsin Humane Society to honor his love for pets and all living creatures.
