Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on May 17, 1940. He was the only child of Orlo Clarissa and Harold Henshaw. He attended University High in Kalamazoo and was a gifted high school athlete excelling in football, basketball and golf. As a summer caddie at his local country club, he had the privilege of carrying a bag for Jessie Owens who was in town for a summer golf tournament. Thus began a lifelong love of the game of golf. He was an accomplished golfer and held himself to the highest standards of integrity when playing each and every round. Cullen attended Princeton University class of 1962 and graduated with a degree in Biochemistry. He then returned to his home state and attended the University of Michigan Medical School graduating in 1966. He completed his residency in Pathology at University of Wisconsin Madison and moved to Neenah, Wisconsin where he was a pathologist at Theda Clark Hospital for 39 years. He cherished his work and loved the intellectual stimulation it provided. He valued all of the relationships he developed with his work colleagues in the hospital lab and counted them among his most respected friends. He was whole-heartedly committed to his work. In his 39-year tenure, he never missed a single day. He left early one day due to a kidney stone, but returned promptly the next day. Cullen is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sally Bos Henshaw originally of Grand Rapids, MI. He is also survived by his three beloved children and seven grandchildren: Jeff Henshaw of Neenah, WI (Jack, Bess, and Nicholas Henshaw), Ann (Keith) Whittaker of New Canaan, CT (Blake, Casey, and Teddy Whittaker) and Rob (Julie) Henshaw of Neenah, WI (Thos Henshaw). Cullen was a voracious reader with a curious mind. It began with Dr. Dolittle and Sherlock Holmes when he was a small boy and extended to all matters of history, biographies and current events. He would become visibly anxious if he had not read four newspapers by 8 am each day. He was one of those people who excelled in intellectual and athletic pursuits, but a quiet sense of humble modesty was a hallmark of his personality. He was comfortable with his own company and could sometimes be interpreted as solitary and cerebral, but his respect, care and love for others ran deep. Cullen was a collector of books, coins, and Finnish glass birds (among many other varied interests). He loved and respected all living things - people and animals. He loved Wolverine football on Saturdays and of course the Green Bay Packers on Sundays. For those who are so inclined, the family has asked that his memory be honored by a donation to the Neenah Public Library in care of Cullen Henshaw in hopes of cultivating a love of reading amongst all. The address is 240 East Wisconsin Ave, Neenah, WI 54956. In addition, his family would be so honored if those who knew him and were touched by his life would perform a deliberate act of kindness in his honor in hopes of spreading some kindness in our world. Dr. Henshaw died peacefully, surrounded by his family on November 6, 2019. He was beloved and will be sorely missed. A memorial service in his honor will be held at a later date.
