Life Story / Obituary
Dorothy Jean (Werden) Kowal, 88, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2017 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, under the care of her family and dear friends.
She was born on December 9, 1928 in Flint, Michigan to Ernest and Luella (Fenner) Werden. She attended Western Michigan University where she obtained a Master’s Degree in Library Science. In 1953 she began a 30 year career as a Librarian with the Kalamazoo Public Schools. She was the first librarian at Loy Norrix High School. In 1974, she married William (Bill) Kowal of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Dorothy was a devoted wife, step mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, with whom she shared her love of reading. While retired, she and Bill enjoyed traveling around the world and spending winters in Arizona.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband Bill; her parents; her sisters Vera Hunt and Norene Buchner; and her brother Donald Werden. She is survived by her stepsons Brian (Linda) and Barry Kowal; her sister-in-law Louise Werden; grandchildren: Nickolas, Matthew, and Anna; as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
According to Dorothy’s wishes cremation has taken place. Her remains will be buried next to Bill’s in the Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI.
