Age 96 of Three Rivers died Thursday May 11, 2017 at her home following a brief illness. She was born in Menasha, WI on July 7, 1920 the daughter of Douglas and Dorothy (Becker) Stowe. The family moved to Three Rivers when she was three years old. Doris graduated from Three Rivers High School in 1938. While in High School she participated in many activities, particularly those involving music. She was class secretary all four years and accompanist for music functions. She later graduated from Albion College in 1942 with a major in music, and where she served on the Student Council and was Chapel Organist for 4 years. She was married to Philip Halverson on July 25, 1943 in Three Rivers. They lived in Williamsburg, VA and San Francisco until Phil shipped out to the South Pacific. Doris then returned to Three Rivers and taught 7th, 8th, and 9th grade English until Phil returned in 1945. They established the Halverson Funeral Chapel in Three Rivers, which they operated for over 50 years. Doris was an active member of the First United Methodist Church since 1923. She was the Choir Director and Assistant Organist for many years. She was a Past President of the United Methodist Women, and member of the Bethany Circle. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, and served on the Board of Directors at the Old Three Rivers Hospital. She continued to volunteer at the new hospital with the Three Rivers Health Auxiliary. Doris is survived by two sons, Jeffrey (Pam) Halverson of Acton, MT and James (Martha) Halverson of Frankenmuth; three grandchildren, Brianna (Rob) Stoinoff of Osgood, IN, Lindsay (Pete) Lee of Billings, MI, and Philip E. Halverson of Frankenmuth; two great-granddaughters, Gussie and Poppy Lee; a brother, Charles Stowe of Torrance, CA; a niece and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and by her husband, Phil in 2011. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 pm Monday at the Eickhoff Farrand Halverson Chapel in Three Rivers. Funeral services will be 11 am Tuesday May 16, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Three Rivers, with Pastor Jim Stilwell officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. It is suggested that memorials be directed to either the First United Methodist Church, or to the Carnegie Center for the Arts. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.efhchapel.com
