Donna Helene Asma, 94, entered her eternal heavenly home on October 19, 2025. She was born on September 19, 1931, to Reverend John and Henrietta (Bouwkamp) VanderPloeg. After graduating as a registered nurse from Gary Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, Donna had a 30-year nursing career as a registered nurse and in nursing administration. After nursing, she owned two high-end women's apparel stores for 15 years. Over the years, she volunteered as president of the Ladies' Missionary Union, president of South Christian School Aid, member of the South Christian School Board, and as a court-appointed special advocate for neglected and abused children. She was the first woman elected in Classis Kalamazoo of the Christian Reformed Church to serve as a deacon on her church consistory.

Donna's faith and family were the most important things in her life. She married John W. Asma in 1954 and they were happily married for 63 years until John's death in May 2017. They had four children and her loving family gave her much joy.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters Jean (Adrian) Geenen, Nancy (Hank) VandenHeuvel, and Betty (Dale) Slobe; and brother John (Margaret) VanderPloeg. She is survived by her children Robin (David) Glerum, Wendy (Raymond) Ling, Cal (Dawn) Asma, and Daniel (Beth) Asma; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Dale Slobe, brother-in-law Al (Mary) Asma, and sister-in-law Nancy (Jake) Asma; and many other extended family members. Donna will surely be missed by her family and friends. But we do not grieve as those without hope because we stand firm on the promises that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ bring.

A memorial celebration of Donna's life will be held at Third Christian Reformed Church, 2400 Winchell Ave., Kalamazoo on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a luncheon and private interment at Fort Custer National Cemetery. The family will greet visitors at the church before the funeral beginning at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Kalamazoo Christian Schools or Centrica Care Navigators. The family extends a special thank you to the caregivers of Centrica Care Navigators and Friendship Village who cared so well for Donna in the last year and a half of her life.
