Clare C. Chamberlain of Crawfordsville, Indiana died January 21, 2003. He was born June 2, 1923 on the family farm at Schoolcraft, Michigan to Herschel and Ida Chamberlain.
Clare was a graduate of Vicksburg High School. Clare entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 where he was then enrolled in the v-12 program at Gustavus Adolphus University at St. Peter Minn and Notre Dame University in South Bend. After the Japanese surrender, he served aboard the USS Norton Sound, which was a Sea Plane Tender in the Pacific Theatre. Clare was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy on May 21, 1946. His military ribbons include the American Area Ribbon, Point System, World War II Victory Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon. Clare married Arlene Dunham in 1948. After Arlene died in March of 1970. He then married Bonnie Campbell in June 1981.
Clare graduated from Michigan State University and is a member of the Michigan State University Alumni. Clare retired from Indiana Farm Bureau Co-op, Inc. in January of 1986 where he was Vice-President of Agri-Products. He was a salesman for Ralston Purina for 12 years, Plant Food and Chemical salesman for Madison County Co-op 3 years, taught High School Vocational Agriculture for 4 years and was the General Manager of Montgomery County Farm Bureau Co-op for 14 years.
Clare’s memberships include Trinity United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 1431, BPO Elks and Indiana Farm Bureau. He was a past Commander of Byron Cox Post #72 and the Sixth District of the American Legion. He was Past Chef de Gare of Voiture 1310, Forty and Eight. He was in charge of Post #72 American Legion Baseball program for six years.
Clare died at Danville Rehabilitation Center on January 21, 2003. Surviving are Sons: David Chamberlain of Rowlett, Texas and Roger Chamberlain of Indianapolis, Indiana; Daughters: Deborah Hawkins of Berlin, Maryland and Sharon Williams of Crawfordsville, Indiana; Sisters: Pualine Foulk of Jonesville, Michigan and Ester Bickle of Clinton Township, Michigan; Brother: Willis Chamberlain of Schoolcraft, Michigan; Stepdaughter: Cathy Waldon and Stepson James Campbell. He had 10 grandchildren, two step grandchildren and three step great grand children.
Funeral services for Clare Chamberlain will be held at 10:30am Friday at Hunt and Son Funeral Home in Crawfordsville, Indiana with visitation from 4-8pm Thursday. There will also be a visitation on Friday January 24 from 6-8pm at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Vicksburg Chapel where the service will also be held on Saturday at 11am. Burial will be at the Riverside Cemetery in Kalamazoo with Military Honors, by the American Legion Post 475.
