Passed away Thursday afternoon, December 7, 2017 at his home. Chuck was born September 9, 1942 in Muskegon, MI the son of the late Paul and Dorothy (Branthaur) Spence. He was employed as an administrator for various human services organizations until his retirement. He was passionate about serving others to improve the world and did so through his work with Community Services Council, Regional Health Agency, Gateway Services, United Way, Fetzer Foundation, and Kalamazoo County Mental Health/Substance Abuse Agency. Chuck was a member of Valley Family Church and enjoyed serving in capacities that allowed him to meet the needs of others. He enjoyed politics, setting up the perfect bird feeder and sitting on the patio with his brother-in-law John solving the world's problems. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. On February 10, 1990 he was united in marriage to his loving wife Joyce, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Jessica Spence (Dylan Harris), Carrie (Chris) Malanga, Troy (Krista) Daily; step-children, Sherri (Kevin) Robinson, Travis (Dawn) Bjork; 4 grandchildren, Collin (Chelsea Duran) Daily, Sierra Malanga, Braeden Malanga, Mae Daily; sisters and brother, Patti "PJ" (Freeman) Haehnel, Charlene (David) Bear, Michael (Kristin) Nipke, Shelley (Gary) Siegert; and many nieces and nephews. Chuck was preceded in death by his mom, Ruthie Spence; and a brother, David Spence. Friends may meet the family from 10-11:00am Tuesday, December 12 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street where services will be held at 11:00am. A time of fellowship will be held immediately following the service in the Langeland Family Centre. Private interment will be at a later date.
