Carol passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 in Kalamazoo at the age of 86. She was born in Massillon, OH on April 27, 1932 a daughter of the late Robert and Kathryn (Boron) Urban. Carol worked as a librarian for many years. She first worked at the Wooster High School Library in Wooster, Ohio as well as the Wayne County Law Library. Wendell transferred in 1971 to Owosso, Michigan where she was employed by the Vernon Public Library in Vernon, Michigan. Another job transfer landed Carol in Kalamazoo, where soon after, she met dearest Bob Ellis who hired her at the Kalamazoo Aviation and History Museum and a more than 3 decade friendship and association ensued. Carol worked a full time schedule right up to her sudden illness this spring. Carol loved most being at her library at the Air Zoo, had been an avid reader, and an accomplished classical pianist. She especially enjoyed the occasional trips to the various casinos around Michigan with friends and family usually followed by dinner at the Cracker Barrel where she always seemed to have a gift card. Carol valued greatly the Air Zoo staff and volunteers who assisted her every day. She was fun-loving with a most positive life outlook and will be missed by many. In 1951, Carol married Wendell R. Smith who preceded her in death in 2002. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Phillip and Christopher Smith. Surviving are three children, Wendy of Utah, Rob (Linda) of Ypsilanti, MI and Timothy of Indiana; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews across the United States, including Alaska. Cremation has taken place with no services as she requested. Memorials may be directed to the Air Zoo or to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
