Life Story / Obituary

Bryan Brookes 64, of Traverse City died at home on October 14, 2015; succumb to a battle with cancer. He was with his beloved son, Andrew Brookes, and companion Debra Trowbridge – in the comfort of hospice.

He was born in England, the son of Trevor and Jo Brookes, where he was a journalist for the Daily Mail – traveling extensively to Africa, Southeast Asia, Europe and the Middle East – primarily as a war correspondent. Bryan came to the US in the late 1970’s, where he was a writer for the TV series M.A.S.H. He produced and directed commercials for client’s including GM, Vernors and Marathon. He also owned, managed and worked in the hospitality industry, which lead him to his most current position at Bistro FouFou in Traverse City – which he loved.

Along with his capacity for facts and figures, (referred to by many as a human encyclopedia) and with a brilliant sense of humor; he would enchant most anyone with stories of such; which were only glimpses into these experiences conveyed with a charming Welch accent.

Bryan loved science; he loved the outdoors and caught his fair share of northern Michigan salmon; he enjoyed F1 racing, a hike or a drive on weekends; and especially happy hour with his friends. His personal best for a Sunday New York Times Crossword was just under 40 minutes… But his passion was cooking. For those who experienced this, know that the secret ingredient was a few swear words.

He is survived by his former wife Eileen Ryan Offenheiser of St. Helen, son Andrew and his wife Nicole, and granddaughter Alannah of Grayling, sister Denise Bailey of West Sussex, UK, and companion Debra Trowbridge of Traverse City.

He is predeceased by his brother Gary Brookes, and his mother and father whom he cherished. A casual memorial is planned for November 8, 2015 from 3-7pm at Bistro FouFou in Traverse City, Michigan. Food and Drinks will be served. The family would appreciate donations for funeral expenses in lieu of flowers to P.O. Box 777, St. Helen, Michigan 48656 attention to Andrew Brookes or www.gofundme.com/bryanbrookes.
