Brian C. Doan, age 44, died suddenly on Sunday, December 17, 2017 in Oberlin, Ohio. He was born April 25, 1973 in New Jersey, spent the first four years of his life in Rochester, Minnesota and grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Brian graduated from Portage Northern High School, Indiana University and went on to earn a Master's degree and a Ph.D. in cinema studies at the University of Florida. He taught cinema and writing classes at Florida for nine years. At Oberlin College, he taught cinema courses on an array of subjects including classic Hollywood, cinephilia, comics, television, and musicals; he also taught media writing and first-year seminar classes and worked in administration. He was devoted to his students. He published media criticism essays at rogerebert.com, Bright Wall/Dark Room, PopMatters, and Cinespect, and his personal blog, and in scholarly collections on advertising and Cleveland as a world cinema location. He is survived by his wife, Denise Guidry; his parents David and Susan Doan; his siblings, Brad Doan and Melissa Doan Heavey, and their spouses Katie Doan and Jon Heavey; five beloved nieces and nephews; and four adored god-nieces and -nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations to public or school libraries, the Cleveland International Film Festival, or the Indiana University Libraries Moving Image Archive.
