Barbara Berry

Barbara L. Berry, age 83 of Portage, died surrounded by her family at Rose Arbor Hospice on January 20, 2019. She was born September 5, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan. Barb graduated from Redford Union High School. On November 16, 1957, she was married to Robert J. Berry, who preceded her in death. She was very active at St. Catherine's of Siena Catholic Church, where she was a member. Barb truly loved to share her time with people, through her work at her children's school, her church while visiting nursing homes and shut-ins, and attending sporting events for her grandchildren. Gathering with her family was important to Barb, whether playing cards during the holidays, family trips up north. Her family includes her children: John (Parris) Berry, Richard (Liz) Berry, Cynthia Berry, Sandra (Randy) Hoeksema, and James Berry; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers and sister: Jack (Kathy) Smith, Jill (Allan) Chapin, and Norman (Cori) Smith; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband Bob, her parents Stanley Smith and Susan (Wirtz, Smith) Croll, and her sister Janet Smith. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 25, 2019, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 1150 W. Centre Avenue. Interment will be in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Friends may visit with Barb's family from 5-8 PM on Thursday, January 24, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street, with a Rosary Service at 7:30 PM.
