Kind, patient, and encouraging, Tony Marfia was born to be an educator. He loved kids, and over the years inspired countless students in his roles as math teacher, basketball coach, and swimming instructor. He was equally devoted to his beloved family, and never happier than when surrounded by those he loved. Although Tony will be deeply missed by all those whose lives he touched, those left behind may draw comfort from knowledge that Tony’s was a life truly well lived. As Tony himself often commented, “he lived with no regrets, and loved his life.”

In the United States, the “Roaring Twenties” were a time of economic prosperity and changing social values, including new rights for women, the popularization of radio, and increasing consumerism. Antonino “Tony” Marfia was born in the middle of this exciting decade, on March 15, 1924, and shared his birth year with the first round-the-world flight, the first Winter Olympics, and the first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.

Tony’s proud parents brought the newest member of their family home to Fennville, Michigan. He grew up in a large family, and had no less than seven siblings to keep him on his toes! As with most children who grew up during the Great Depression, Tony learned the value of hard work and education at a young age.

The years sped by, and before he knew it Tony was walking down the aisle to accept his high school diploma. His first move after graduation was to enlist in the U.S. Navy, and he went on to serve his country courageously during World War II. Tony was honorably discharged in September of 1945, and wasted no time in marrying the love of his life, Louise Cunningham, on October 18, 1945.

The next few years were quite busy, as Tony went back to school while working full-time. As the years went by, Tony and Louise were delighted to welcome two sons into their family, whom they named Dennis and Craig. Tony loved being a father, and always put his family first. Tragically, Dennis passed away when he was only 8 years old.

After successfully earning his teaching certificate, Tony and his family settled down in Portage, Michigan. Tony accepted a job as a math teacher at Portage Central High School, where he dedicated himself to teaching, mentoring students, and community involvement. He was the school basketball coach for many years, and also ran the Marfia Swim School in the summer, where he spent countless hours teaching the children of Portage how to swim in his backyard pool.

Tony eventually retired from the job he loved, and settled down to enjoy his golden years. He and Louise liked to travel, and made trips to destinations including Hawaii and Australia. Tony also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and bowling, and was involved in several leagues. By this time, Tony and Louise had become proud grandparents and great-grandparents, and loved spending time with their extended family.

Sadly, the health of both Tony and Louise began to decline last year. They moved to Cambridge Manor in Grandville, close to their grandson, Chris, who made sure they received the best of care.

Patient and encouraging, cheerful and kind, Tony was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, a loyal friend, and a talented educator. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his many friends and family members.

Mr. Antonino “Tony” Marfia died July 16, 2013, at the age of 89. Tony’s family includes his wife, Louise; his grandsons, Sean (Paula) Marfia, Christopher (Cate) Marfia and Adam Marfia; his great-grandchildren, Patrick, Austin, Annette, Nik, Rachel, Sarah and Evelyn; as well as many other relatives. He was preceded in death by his sons, Dennis and Craig Marfia.

A memorial gathering will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, at Life Story Funeral Homes, Portage (5975 Lovers Lane, 344-5600). Memorial donations can be made to an organization of your choice.
