Alice Grace Vermeulen, age 84, of Fremont, MI passed away peacefully on Friday, September 8, 2017. Alice was born on January 11, 1933 in Jackson, Michigan. She was the first child of Harold and Sorone (Babcock) Dill. Growing up, Alice adored time at her family's lake house, going to school, and spending time with her grandmother in Florida. Alice graduated from Jackson High School and went on to attend Kalamazoo College. While there, she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work and met Bertram W. Vermeulen. The two were married on September 4, 1954 in Jackson. As a United Methodist pastor and pastor's wife, Bert and Alice served churches throughout central and west Michigan before calling Fremont home in 1969. Being a pastor's wife was something she embraced with her signature enthusiasm and considered a calling. Alice was a member of the Fremont United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, in addition she taught Sunday school and served on many committees. Many were influenced by Alice's innate ability to recruit others for all sorts of service projects and her drive to serve her community was infectious. Alice was a social worker for Newaygo County Community Services for over 25 years. Alice worked to serve and better the lives of others in any way she could in both professional and personal roles. In her free time, Alice took up a plethora of hobbies ranging from woodworking to word searches. Alice was an avid reader, a talented seamstress, and an incredible cook and baker. Alice cherished her time with her family and loved being a mother and grandmother. Alice had a wonderful sense of humor and warm smile that could always be counted on to lift the spirits of others. Alice is survived by her husband of 63 years, Rev. Bertram W. Vermeulen; children Edwin A. Vermeulen of New York City, New York, Anne Featherstone of Fremont, and Martha (Richard) Kallenbach of Fremont; grandchildren Katherine Kallenbach of Midland, Jacob (Ashley) Featherstone of Sneads Ferry, North Carolina, Alexander Kallenbach of Okemos, and Bennett Featherstone of Mount Pleasant. She was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Lee Dill, and her son-in-law, Jim Featherstone. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 22, 2017 from 5 to 8 pm at the Crandell Funeral Home in Fremont. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Fremont United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Bert and Alice Vermeulen Local Service Initiatives Endowment through the Fremont Area Community Foundation.
