Went home to be with Jesus Tuesday, October 9, 2012. Age 83 years. Wayne was born in Miami, FL on October 23, 1928, the son of the late Nicholas and Fannie (Stelma) Gerber. He served stateside with the United States Army's 3rd Army Band during the Korean War. He worked as a construction supervisor, most recently with Maxwell and Associates building the Woodbridge Condominiums. Wayne was a member of Berean Baptist Church. He served on the board of the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission. He enjoyed woodworking and golfing. He was married to Pearl Esther (Zuidema) Gerber on September 30, 1950; she preceded him in death on August 22, 2005. Surviving are four children, Albert (Mary) Gerber of Comstock Park, Jeanne Mudie of Portage, Mary (Thomas) Brown of New Port Richie, FL and Paul (Nancy) Gerber of Galesburg, five grandchildren, Kristi and Kenneth Mudie, Nicholas and Eric Gerber and Thomas Brown, Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Jenna and Wyatt Brown; his nephew, David Hinkley; his niece, Robyn (Ken) Brown; and his cousin, Ed McCarrick. Wayne was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Larry Mudie; and his sister, Geneva Hinkley. A private graveside interment will take place in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at Berean Baptist Church, 7813 S. 12th St. Rev. Will Davis and Rev. Bill Abernathy will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, 222 N. Park St., Kalamazoo, MI 49007 or the Park Village Pines, 2920 Crystal Lane, Kalamazoo, MI 49009.
