It takes a very special person to care for children, and Diane Boling had just the right amount of patience and love, not only for her family, but those entrusted to her care. Family meant everything to Diane, and her grandchildren gave her the twinkle in her eye, and joy in her heart. Sadly missed, she will be remembered with love.

The end of World War II brought much prosperity as industry and manufacturing were at an all time high. Known as the greatest generation, Americans came through the Great Depression and succeeded through yet another world war, and were ready to begin anew. Born in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan on February 17, 1948, Diane Beverly was the youngest of three children born to Aloysius and Thelma (Vincent) Schumacher. Their one and only daughter, her parents thought she was an angel, and her older brothers, Ronald and Gary, babied and doted on her all the more. Their family lived in rural Beal City where young Diane's father was a farmer. Her mother, a homemaker, tended to the children and helped on the farm.

Diane attended the local schools and had a few close friendships while growing up. She enjoyed all things typical for the times, and was eager to begin high school. Having graduated from Beal City High School in 1966, Diane began attending M.J. Murphy Beauty College right out of high school. After graduating, she soon began working for Bobbie Jane's Hair Salon.

A night out skating in Lake Station forever changed the course of Diane's life when she met a young man named, Leonard "Pete" Boling. They were both smitten from the start. Young and in love, they exchanged vows of marriage at St. Joseph Church in Beal City before moving to Big Rapids where they made their home. Before long, the birth of their two daughters was a great blessing in Diane's life. As a mother, Diane was very loving and caring towards Carrie and Jennifer. She made a good home for her family, and nothing could have made her happier.

In 1973, Diane moved back to Beal City where she returned to her family home to help care for her ailing parents. She eventually became a daycare provider which allowed her to be at home for her own children. For 31 years, Diane lovingly looked after the kids in her care, and was excellent at it. She was like a grandma to all of the children. However, when Diane became a grandmother, there was nothing quite like it. She was the happiest when surrounded by their endless energy and hugs.

Although on the quiet side, Diane possessed a gentle nature all her own. She enjoyed knitting and reading, and at times looking up recipes on the internet. An unlikely sports fan, hockey was her favorite sport to watch. When it came to movies, Diane enjoyed old black and white films, especially Shirley Temple and John Wayne flicks. Most of her hobbies revolved around her grandchildren and the children she cared for. She wasn't one for much travel, but she did enjoy a trip to Disney World in Florida with her Aunt Margaret Burman in her younger years, and later a trip there with her daughter, Carrie and her family. Diane also visited her daughter, Jennifer in Chicago whenever she could.

Never one for the social scene, Diane's family came first and foremost in her life. Her own family and the children she took care of were her main focus, and she was more likely to worry about others than herself. Known to be protective, even as her girls became grown, she continued to often say, "Be careful, and call me when you get there.” And when it came to advice, she'd often also say to them, “You’re just going to do what you want anyway.” Other than family and the many children in her life, Diane pretty much kept to herself. Her Catholic faith was important to her, and she faithfully attended St. Joseph the Worker Church in Beal City, her home parish of many years.

At the age of 64, Diane B. Boling, of Beal City, passed away unexpectedly Monday, January 14, 2013 at home. Dearly missed by her loving family, she is survived by her daughters, Carrie (Gene) Bass of Lake and Jennifer (Brendan) Fletcher of Chicago, Illinois; six grandchildren, Cody, Shelby, Sarah, Abigail, Hannah and Olivia; her brothers, Ron (Joan) Schumacher and Gary (Judy) Schumacher, both of Beal City; and many nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Mass for Diane will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, January 17, 2013 at St. Joseph the Worker Church in Beal City with Father Patrick Jankowiak presiding. Cremation will follow and her ashes will be buried in St. Joseph Cemetery next to her parents. Her family will receive friends in the gathering room of the church on Wednesday, January 16 from 3-5 and 7-9 PM with the Vigil beginning at 7:30 PM. Visitation continues on Thursday one hour prior to Mass at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the wishes of the family. Envelopes will be available at the church or at Lux Family Funeral Home.
