Randy Potratz was the kind of person everyone wants to have for a friend: kind and warm-hearted, easy-going and considerate. More than this, he was a friend to everyone he met. Although Randy’s time here was much shorter than his friends and family would have wished, he made excellent use of what time he was given. He made time to do what he liked – bowling and golfing, cheering on his favorite teams and taking road trips – and more importantly, he did it in the company of those he loved – his friends, his parents and brothers, and his girlfriend Veronica.

On Thanksgiving of 1967, Samuel Peter and Shirley A. (Hollar) Potratz had something extra special to be thankful for – the birth of a healthy baby boy a just few days earlier. Born on November 17, Randall Roy Potratz was the third of three boys, with older brothers Rob and Ronald waiting for him at home. Randy’s father, Samuel, worked as a machinist at Sealed Power, while his mother, Shirley, was a typist for the State of Michigan at Hoffmaster State Park. The three Potratz boys were a rambunctious trio. One of their all-time favorite activities was playing on the trampoline in the backyard. In fact, Ron would occasionally be able to talk Randy into cutting class in order to sneak back home and get the gang out on the trampoline. Randy also enjoyed music from an early age. When he was only three years old, he began playing his toy guitar and pretending to be on stage. Although his rock star days ended when he was seven, music continued to be an important part of Randy’s life.

In 1986, Randy graduated from Fruitport High School. Soon afterwards, he found employment as a truck driver for Spartan Food Stores. This job suited Randy, since he enjoyed being on the road and meeting new people. His friendly and sincere personality ensured that he made friends wherever he went. In addition to the daily travel for work, Randy also loved taking longer trips. One of his favorite destinations was Colorado, where he often visited his brother Ron. He also had fond memories of a trip made with his parents to visit his Uncle Phil in Texas. In his free time, Randy enjoyed meeting up with friends for golf, bowling, or a game of cards. An avid sports fan, he enthusiastically supported the Red Wings, the Chicago White Sox, the University of Michigan, and especially the Green Bay Packers (his father was from Wisconsin). He was also active in both the Teamsters and the Men’s’ Auxiliary VFW Post #3125.

When Randy was thirty-three, he was lucky enough to meet the love of his life, Veronica King. The couple met online, and soon decided they wanted to meet in person. This was the start of a wonderful nine year relationship. Generous and big-hearted, Randy was a committed and loving boyfriend. Being with Veronica enriched Randy’s life in many ways, big and small. For example, before he met Veronica, Randy was sure that he was a dog person. After Veronica convinced him to get a kitten with her, however, he became so attached to it that he insisted on a “kitty sitter” for Cosmo during a one-day trip to Indiana!

Randy Potratz was a kind and caring man, a true friend and a loving son, brother and boyfriend. He will be deeply missed and loving remembered by his many friends and family members.

Randy died on October 18, 2011, after sustaining a fatal head injury from a tragic fall.

Randy’s family includes his mother, Shirley Potratz; his brothers, Rob (Dalene) Potratz of Baldwin and Ron (Renee) Potratz of CO; his girlfriend, Veronica King of Fruitport; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Potratz.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011, 2:00 p.m., at the Clock Chapel – Muskegon, with Pastor Donald Wood officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association of Michigan or the American Diabetes Association of Michigan. Please visit Randy’s personal memory page at www.clockfuneralhome.com to leave a favorite memory or sign the online guest book.
