A. Carl Trobaugh

The angels are rejoicing at the homecoming of A. Carl Trobaugh, 81, who went to be with his Savior on Monday, August 13, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospital after an extended illness. He fought the good fight, he finished the race, he kept the faith.

Carl was born March 24, 1931 in Danville, Illinois, the son of Alva C. and Elsie Handley Trobaugh. He married Joann Hulse in 1951; she was always his Sweetheart and they enjoyed 61 years of love and companionship.

Carl attended Danville High School at the same time as Jerry VanDyke; they both got expelled together for driving a motorcycle through the school halls. They both then attended Bismarck High School, where Carl graduated in 1949 (Jerry returned to Danville High and graduated in 1950). Carl briefly attended Olivet Nazarene College.

Carl proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955, with overseas duty in Korea, attaining the rank of sergeant first class. He was trained as a combat cook; from that experience, cooking was to become his lifelong interest. He was the head cook at Olivet Nazarene University, and eventually the kitchen manager. He was dietary manager of 2 hospitals in Galesburg, Illinois; he then managed a dining hall at Rantoul Air Force Base. After returning to the Kankakee area, he managed or was a chef for several local restaurants and later head chef at Bon Vivant Country Club. After fire destroyed the club house, he retired from full time work, but enjoyed years of driving a school bus for Bradley-Bourbonnais High School, retiring in 2007 after working for over 60 years.

Between cooking jobs, Carl occasionally drove a semi, and loved to talk of his truck driving days. He was a sergeant for the Bourbonnais Police Department during the 1960s. He also owned a motorcycle during his middle years and loved to reminisce about his rides with his buddies from work and church, the Agape Riders. He enjoyed talking motorcycles with his son and later his oldest grandson and was jealous of their Harleys.

He was raised in the Church of the Nazarene, and was a long time member of Kankakee First Church of the Nazarene. During his life, he humbly served as a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and church board member at Galesburg, Rantoul, and Kankakee Nazarene churches.

Carl will be remembered for his orneriness, his kind, gentle nature, and being a loving and giving husband, father and Grandpa. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife and three children, Todd (Sue) Trobaugh of Epping, New Hampshire, Karen (Keith) Dillman of Wellington, Illinois, and Janet (Ted) Borchardt of Bourbonnais; grandchildren Ken (Regan) Dillman of Indiana, Dr. Kristin (Kevin) Jones of Libertyville, Kelley (John) Dorhauer of Chicago, Jennifer (Adam) Johnson of Bourbonnais, Jessica (Paul) Krueger of Calumet City, and William, George and Christopher Borchardt of Bourbonnais; six great children and 2 step great granddaughters; one brother, David (Betty) Trobaugh of Fairmont, West Virginia and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, George Trobaugh.

Visitation will be Sunday, August 19 at Schreffler Funeral Home, West Court Street, Kankakee from 2:00 to 5:00p.m. Funeral service will be at Kankakee First Church of the Nazarene, Monday, August 20 at 11:00a.m., with interment at Memorial Gardens.
